Picture this. You are standing at your window with nothing on but your birthday suit. You sip your coffee and look up to find your neighbour staring at you. He is wearing a nerd sweater and khaki pants. You always thought he was cute. Then it hits if you can see him, he can see you too. Yes we should probably get you curtains.
First off the difference between curtains and drapes:
Curtains are lighter, thin and sheer. They do not necessarily block the light; they are more of decorative pieces.
Drapes on the other hand are heavy fabric. They block the light, cold and heat and are usually bold colours. They give a formal look and are best for privacy.
For the purposes of this article let us use curtains. How you dress windows speaks a lot about a room. We use curtains for three reasons; add softness, filter/block light or for privacy. For whichever reason you get curtain three things are key, the fabric of the curtain, hanging style and the height of the curtain.
Sheer/ cotton are perfect for a room that you want to light up and privacy is not a priority. However, patterned sheer will serve both purposes and at the same time, be an instant decor piece. Should you use them in the baby room and the bedroom where there is a light sleeper, have an opaque fabric beneath it to block the light. Vertical lines on the other hand makes the ceiling look taller giving the illusion of space.
Curtain rods coupled with metal grommets open smoothly to give a modern touch.
Hidden drapery give a room sophistication and clean look that allows the curtains to stand out.
If you want apply layering of the curtains, have two rods. Use your preferred fabric to layer up.
Height of the curtain
The pain of it all, how high/low should the curtain be? As long as you want it. There are many ways to play with the height.
- Floor length – Lengthens windows and looks more polished and works in rooms where you host guests.
- Seal of the window length – Casual look. Usually works in small apartments.
- Slightly beneath the window seal – It gives a lean profile and makes your windows look taller.
- Bohemian – This all the way to the floor up to two inches. Have this in a room that has less traffic because your child or pet will slid on it and tear the curtain up or worse, hurt themselves.
